PA AG Objects to Nebraska Health Care Deal
Filed under: General
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 7:52 am

Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett is joining with AGs from across the country in objecting to a special $100 million dollar deal for Nebraska included in the Senate’s pro-abortion health care bill.  The deal was designed to win the vote of Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, who had previously opposed the troubled legislation, but then flip-flopped.

A CBS News report stated:

“We believe this provision is constitutionally flawed,” South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster and the 12 other attorneys general wrote in the letter to be sent Wednesday night to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

“As chief legal officers of our states we are contemplating a legal challenge to this provision and we ask you to take action to render this challenge unnecessary by striking that provision,” they wrote.

There’s still time to oppose the Senate’s pro-abortion health care bill, before the bill goes to conference committee.  Please call your Congressional Representative and Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter and voice your objections.  You can reach your Congressman through the Congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121.  Senator Casey’s number is 202-224-6324 and Senator Specter’s number is 202-224-4254.

What to Do About Health Care Reform
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 10:06 am

You might be asking yourself, “What can I do now to stop pro-abortion health care reform?”  Even though the U.S. Senate has already passed a health care bill with public funding of abortion, there’s still time to prevent an overhaul of the nation’s health care system from including the financing and promotion of abortion.  The Senate and House must agree on a single plan, and we want to make sure that any plan they come up with specifically excludes abortion.  So, it’s important for you to call your Congressional Representative and Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter with that message.  You can reach your Representative through the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.  Senator Casey’s number is 202-224-6324, while Senator Specter’s number is 202-224-4254.  Let them know you oppose the pro-abortion Senate health care bill.  Meanwhile, for up-to-the-minute updates on the health care situation, visit http://www.nrlactioncenter.com/.

Education Director Maria Vitale has written a column for LifeNews.com about how a commercial about animal cruelty made her think about abortion and how it’s hidden from public view.  Vitale forecasts that YouTube will help to fill the publicity gap, putting a face to the victimization of abortion.  You’ll find her thought-provoking essay at  http://www.lifenews.com/state4685.html .

After Nearly 40 Years, Abortion Still a Major Issue

The York Dispatch has published an op-ed piece by Education Director Maria Vitale about why, nearly 40 years after Roe v. Wade, abortion remains a major issue in the country.  As Maria points out, there are scientific reasons why the abortion question is not settled.  You can read the column at http://yorkdispatch.inyork.com/yd/viewpoints/oped/ci_14017593 .  Please share the link with your friends on Facebook and your followers on Twitter!

Ad Urges Casey to Be Like His Father
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 8:22 am

The Susan B. Anthony List has released a hard-hitting ad which invokes the memory of a pro-life hero, the late Robert Casey, Sr., former Governor of Pennsylvania.  In publicizing the video, the President of the Susan B. Anthony List, Marjorie Dannenfelser, writes regarding health care reform:

The future of this bill rests in the hands of Bob Casey, Jr.  Will he join Ben Nelson and follow in the footsteps of his father?  Or will he give in to the Planned Parenthood lobbyists who so hated his father?

You can view the ad at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaNdjExSA68&feature=player_embedded .  After watching the commercial, be sure to call Senator Casey’s office at 202-224-6324 and urge him to vote against the pro-abortion health care reform bill!

Senate Approves Bill Funding Abortions in D.C.
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 9:12 am

The U.S. Senate has approved an omnibus spending bill that funds abortions in the nation’s capital.  Pro-abortion President Barack Obama is expected to sign the legislation.  As LifeNews.com reported:

Several pro-life organizations called on members of the Senate to oppose the bill because it overturned the      Dornan Amendment that has prohibited taxpayer funding of abortions in the District of Columbia.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council called the bill “a Christmas gift to Planned Parenthood” and “supporters of coercive abortion.”

“This appropriations bill guts a longstanding prohibition on using public funds to pay for abortions in the District of Columbia,” Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life complained in a statement to LifeNews.com.

“The bill also provides millions of dollars for international ‘family planning’ that could be directed to organizations that pay for and promote abortions. A majority of Americans do not support the use of their tax dollars to pay for abortions,” she said.

What the Stupak Amendment Won’t Do
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 8:21 am

The New York Times has published an op/ed by Congressman Bart Stupak, a Democrat from Michigan, explaining what the Stupak-Pitts Amendment to the House health care reform plan won’t do:

“Some opponents of the amendment have tried to argue that it would effectively end health insurance coverage of abortion in both the private and public sectors. This argument is nothing more than a scare tactic.

“The language in our amendment is completely consistent with the Hyde Amendment, which in the 33 years since its passage has done nothing to inhibit private health insurers from offering abortion coverage. There is no reason to believe that a continuation of this policy would suddenly create undue hardship for the insurance industry — or for those who wish to use their private insurance to pay for an abortion.”

While the Stupak-Pitts Amendment overwhelmingly passed the House, a similar amendment, known as the Nelson-Hatch-Casey Amendment, died in the Senate.

Given the pro-abortion and pro-rationing provisions of the Senate health care reform bill, it’s important that you contact Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter and let them know that you oppose the bill.  Senator Casey’s number is 202-224-6324.  Senator Specter’s number is 202-224-4254.

PA Pro-Life Urges Defeat of Health Care Reform Bill
Filed under: General
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 7:48 am

The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation is urging the Senate to defeat the health care reform bill proposed by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and supported by pro-abortion President Barack Obama.  On Tuesday, the Senate killed the Nelson/Hatch/Casey Amendment, which would have barred federal funding of abortion under health care reform.

“A majority of senators (Tuesday) voted to keep abortion covered in the proposed federal government insurance program, and to subsidize private insurance plans that cover abortion on demand,” said Douglas Johnson, legislative director of National Right to Life.  ”Now, the vote on cloture on the bill itself will become the key vote on whether to put the federal government into the abortion business.  We will oppose cloture on the bill, which would require 60 affirmative votes.  In addition, a number of pro-life Democrats in the House, who supported passage of health care legislation on November 7, will not vote for the Senate bill in its current form.  So, this is a long way from over.”

Please call U.S. Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter and tell them you want them to vote against the health care reform bill because of its pro-abortion and pro-rationing provisions.  Senator Casey’s number is 202-224-6324.  Senator Specter’s number is 202-224-4254.

Urgent Alert–Call Senators Casey & Specter Today!
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 9:17 am

This is an urgent congressional alert from the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation.

The U.S. Senate worked across the weekend, voting on amendments to the massive health care bill (H.R. 3590) proposed by Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nv.). The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation strongly opposes the bill because of multiple provisions that would promote abortion and the rationing of lifesaving medical care.

Pro-life Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Ben Nelson (D-Ne.) plan to soon file an amendment to the bill, which will be supported by the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, National Right to Life, and other major pro-life groups. The Hatch-Nelson Amendment would make the same critical policy changes to the Reid bill that were accomplished in the House of Representatives by adoption of the NRLC-backed Stupak-Pitts Amendment to the House version of the health care legislation (H.R. 3962) on November 7.

Thus, the effect of the Hatch-Nelson Amendment would be to prevent the proposed new government health insurance program — the “public option” — from paying for abortions, and also to prevent federal funds from being used to subsidize the purchase of private health plans that pay for elective abortion.

Time is short! Please telephone the offices of Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter. Urge them to support the Hatch-Nelson Amendment to the health care bill (H.R. 3590). The phone number for Senator Casey is 202-224-6324.  The phone number for Senator Specter is 202-224-4254. In most cases, you can also obtain fax numbers, and phone numbers for senators’ in-state offices, through the NRLC Legislative Action Center at this internet address:
http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/dbq/officials/

After the Senate has voted on the Hatch-Nelson Amendment, there will be other critical votes on the health care legislation! The legislative situation may change rapidly. Any time you want to check the current status of the legislation, visit this page on the Legislative Action Center:

Casey Won’t Say If Abortion Funding Will Affect His Vote on Health Care Reform
Filed under: General
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 8:10 am

LifeNews.com has picked up a story from CNS News indicating that Senator Bob Casey has stopped short of saying that he would vote against the health care reform bill in the Senate if it includes abortion funding–even though such a bill would be completely unacceptable to pro-lifers.  This means that it is more imperative than ever to call Senator Casey’s office and urge him to support the Nelson amendment barring federal funding of abortion under health care reform, and to vote against any health care plan that does not contain such an amendment.   You can reach Senator Casey’s office by calling 202-224-6324.  To read the entire LifeNews.com story, please visit http://www.lifenews.com/state4618.html .

Pro-Abortion Rally in DC Attracts Few Participants
Filed under: General

News outlets reported that a pro-abortion rally in Washington to protest the Stupak-Pitts Amendment to health care reform legislation attracted “hundreds” of demonstrators.  Compare that to the hundreds of thousands who are expected to crowd the nation’s capital next month for the annual March for Life.  You can read more about the pro-abortion rally here.  Despite the low turnout for the anti-Stupak rally, pro-lifers need to continue to flood the phone lines of Senators Casey and Specter, urging them to support a Stupak-like amendment in the Senate.  Senator Casey’s number is 202-224-6324.  Senator Specter’s number is 202-224-4254.  Please call today!

Senator Nelson to Sponsor Stupak-like Amendment
Filed under: General
Posted by: Maria Vitale @ 9:40 am

LifeNews.com is reporting that U.S. Senator Ben Nelson, a Democrat from Nebraska, is working on a bipartisan amendment, similar to the House’s Stupak-Pitts Amendment, which would bar federal funding of abortion under health care reform.  National public opinion polls have consistently shown that the vast majority of Americans oppose government funding of abortion.  There are also a number of Congressmen who will derail health care reform if abortion is not excluded from the final bill.  Please call Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter and urge them to support a Stupak-like amendment in health care reform.  Senator Casey’s number is 202-224-6324.  Senator Specter’s number is 202-224-4254.  The lives of preborn children and the welfare of their mothers depend on those calls!
