Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum’s baby daughter, Isabella, is turning two. It’s quite an achievement, given the traumatic way in which her life began. Santorum describes her birth in his column in the Philadelphia Inquirer:
“Incompatible with life.” The doctor’s words kept echoing in my head as I held my sobbing wife, Karen, just four days after the birth of our eighth child, Isabella Maria.
Bella was born with three No. 18 chromosomes, rather than the normal two. The statistics were heartbreaking: About 90 percent of children with the disorder, known as trisomy 18, die before or during birth, and 90 percent of those who survive die within the first year.
Bella was baptized that day, and then we spent every waking hour at her bedside, giving her a lifetime’s worth of love and care. However, not only did she not die; she came home in just 10 days.
Santorum notes that Bella has had significant health challenges,
And yet we have also been inspired - by her fighting spirit, and by the miracle of seeing our little flower blossom into a loving, joyful child who is at the center of our family life.
Most children with trisomy 18 diagnosed in the womb are aborted. Most who survive birth are given hospice care until they die. In these cases, doctors advise parents that these disabled children will die young or be a burden to them and society. But couldn’t the same be said of many healthy children?
All children are a gift that comes with no guarantees. While Bella’s life may not be long, and though she requires our constant care, she is worth every tear.
You can read the rest of Santorum’s touching column here. He will be sharing his family’s heroic pro-life story at our Celebrate Life Banquet October 19th in Harrisburg. To register online, please visit http://www.paprolife.org/events/state.html .
A Philadelphia-area foster mother who blew the whistle on a government employee who allegedly coerced her foster daughter into having a late-term abortion has lost custody of her foster children. The government worker had told the woman’s pregnant teenager that she would lose custody of her toddler if she refused to have an abortion. As the Philadelphia Daily News states:
The foster mother previously told the Daily News that she had overheard DHS worker Cynthia Brown tell her 16-year-old foster charge, whose name is being withheld because she is a minor, that she would separate the toddler and the unborn child if she went to term.
DHS later obtained a judge’s order to allow the teen to get an abortion. Brown drove the teen, who was 24 weeks pregnant, to have an abortion in New Jersey for the first day of the two-day procedure. Abortions in Pennsylvania are illegal once a pregnancy reaches 24 weeks.
